An in-depth introduction to careers in nursing, medical imaging, medical laboratory technology, respiratory care, physical and occupational therapy. Activities will explore the roles of specialized health care professionals as they care for simulated patients in a state-of-the-art teaching/learning facility. Equipment used will include high-fidelity computerized patient simulators and other laboratory devices.
Students will learn the assessment process for heart, lungs and pulse. They will practice carefully supervised IV starts on manikins. Trauma assessment and management skills will be introduced with active participatory learning by each student working as a team member. Students will learn about hand-washing, germ transmission and apply infection control techniques. Concepts related to blood administration, and eye and ear assessments will be included. Concepts related to medical imaging and medical laboratory technology will be introduced in the environment of high technology laboratories. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques, bag-mask ventilation and bedside assessments for the respiratory therapist will be introduced and practiced.
All sessions will be taught by fully qualified Tyler Junior College nursing and health science professors.
